Sub-Saharan Africa is facing huge challenges on multiple domains.

The polities that emerged from decolonization are weak (if not failed) states whose democratic nature is shaky at best, and in many cases they are outright authoritarian regimes. Society is fragmented along ethnic and religious lines. This comes together with widespread poverty and severe wealth inequality. Natural resources are exploited (often by foreign entities) with little benefit for locals. Armed conflict is common. Disease and malnutrition affect large parts of the population. Environmental degradation is another huge problem, and the area is extremely vulnerable to the deleterious effects of global warming.

All this should not be a matter of concern for Africans only. Deteriorating living conditions translate into instability, which has consequences on the international level in the form of terrorism, piracy and illicit traffic. Finally, the combination of these factors is the driver of the migratory crisis that is affecting Europe.  Having written a few articles where I examine the problems affecting Africa and their impact, I decided to create a dedicated section here on Strategikos.
